Friday run – my doorbuster

Like a good number of Americans I woke up early this morning with the idea of snatching up a deal. I threw my clothes on and zipped down the steps. I got the rubber rolling and off I went. 6.2 treadmill miles later with an average of 10 minutes is the deal I landed…it felt really good. I felt even better when stepping on the scale…I hit my initial goal of 225 lbs.

I started this journey on Xmas day last year and said I’d like to be at 225 lbs by Xmas day 2013…I am ahead of schedule. I wasn’t worried about Thanksgiving, which has traditionally been my time to eat, slack and pack on the pounds. I have focused on getting my runs in while I have been on vacation, which makes eating what I want simple. I knew my calorie intake would be higher so I laid down more miles. As I have been saying, this is all math. I don’t starve myself I just eat sensible and watch my calories. I also try to steer clear of empty calories like you’ll find in pop / soda.

I have a lot to be thankful for this time of year (family, friends, home, etc). I am very thankful that the pounds I have shed have made me a better person both physically and mentally. I now know I am on course for a much longer fulfilling life.

Happy Holidays!

Friday run – increasing the speed

I knew this would happen. I start to go longer distances and my speed was staying constant at 10 minute averages. Now that I am comfortable going 5 miles per morning my speeds are dropping. I laid down a 9:46 average this morning. I also got faster during each mile. The run this morning felt good and I am once again trying to find that comfortable speed. Obviously I am okay with all this as it is another indicator my training plan is working.

Time to finish out the week strong.

Saturday run – kept on running

Went for a 5 mile run that turned into an 8.4 mile run. I got to that point where I could turn to go for 5 miles and I went straight. I was feeling good and wanted to see what I could do. I slowed my pace as I knew once I didn’t turn I was committed to 8+ miles. I ended up averaging 10:24 and I am happy with that since the distance was longer.

The run today was important for so many reasons. It was the longest run I have done. Before this I had only gone 6+ a few times. It also was a statement run in a week I went over 300 miles. I started running on August 6 and now have piled up 315 miles (same distance from Cleveland to Indianapolis). I also chose the road less traveled today. It would have been easy to turn left and take the shorter path, but I didn’t. Very happy with the run today and I look forward to building on it.

Friday run – 5 by 7

Staying with distance I have been focused on 5 by 7. That is a 5 mile run by 7 am. Today I averaged 9:48 and yesterday I was at 9:37. Speed is fun, but distance makes me feel better throughout the day.

The longer distances have helped me with calorie burn and ultimately weight loss. I had hit another one of those weight plateaus, but now I am back to losing about a pound a week with the help of the longer runs.

The pounds are harder to shed now as I get smaller, which is fine as I am working my plan and that was factored in.

Sunday run – distance over speed

This week I started out focused on speed, but ended the week racking up distance. In the last three days I have ran 15.7 miles, which works out to 5.2 miles per day. I have kept a steady pace with 10 minute averages and decided to kick the distance up.

I have hit another plateau with the morning 5K so I am going to look to increase my distances. I realized I can only get so fast doing the same workout everyday. I need to continue to build muscle with the help of my trainer and lose weight…both will help to increase my speed. I don’t plan to go crazy with distance (yet), but I have found I can run 5 miles and still feel good.

Getting close to my first goal of 225 lbs. It is kind of funny that now I am having more issues with clothes than working out…honestly I never thought I’d have to worry about that.

Thursday run – getting it done

I haven’t posted in over a week. Guess I have been a bit busy running. I have gotten as fast as an 8:44 average over the past few days. Today I turned in a 9:16. That is a good number, especially since I killed it yesterday with the trainer.

Everything is going to be all a twitter today. Should be fun.
