Saturday run – under 9 for 5

Now I’m getting a bit obsessed…I went out of my way to find a running segment on Strava so I could test myself. Not too shabby as I ended up 8th on the half mile stretch with a 8:08 average. I then had to keep running to get home so I tried not to blow it all out only halfway into my run.

I’m very happy with the output today as I went under the 9:00 minute average for the first time over a 5 mile distance. Check that off the running bucket list…8 minute averages here I come.

China Runnings

I had the opportunity to spend last week in China. It was an amazing trip. Between meetings, meals, little sleep and a conference I was still able to lay down 34 miles running.

People always ask me about the air quality and running in China. It wasn’t bad and I was able to run outside 5 of the 7 days. Those other 2 days the air quality plummeted so I was forced onto the treadmill.

The two most difficult things were lack of sleep from never adjusting to the time and dodging people. I was sleeping in 3 hour blocks and then awake for 2 hours. This makes running difficult if you aren’t rested. Luckily I was okay with my 9:30 minute averages so I pushed through. Dodging the people in the morning was tough…especially near the bus stops. It felt like I was running an obstacle course every morning. Towards the end of the week I got the bus schedule timing down and ran between the waves of people.

I used to make excuses when I traveled about not being able to workout. Now I make excuses to work out like going to bed early and eating right.

Saturday run – raining personal records

I laid in bed a bit longer today wondering if the rain would stop.  When I finally heard it slow down I decided to get out of bed and lace up my running shoes.  I love running in the rain because I don’t have to worry about heat or humidity…I can just focus on my pace.  That led to a 9:07 average and a personal record for a 10K of 56:37.

I’ve now racked up 877 miles running this year and I’m within spitting distance of hitting my goal of 1,000 miles for the year.  I couldn’t be happier with my progress running, cycling and the overall progress I’ve made being focused on my health.  I still have about 11 lbs to go to be at my final target wait, but I know if I keep turning in runs like this morning I’m going to get there in no time…and have one heck of a good time doing it.
