Run Day 72 – Monsters and Gladiators Community Fun Run 5K

The first day of Spring and its snowing…go figure. I tossed on the layers and headed to Cleveland for the 5K.

I was looking forward to this 5K as it crosses both the Hope and Veteran’s Memorial Bridges. That means a course that isn’t flat. I knew I’d have the ability to motor past some people who haven’t run the bridges before…they can be tough if you’re not expecting the inclines.

I finished with an 8:28 average. That put me 11 out of 33 in my age group. I was 124 out of 697 overall. My watch time had me at an 8:24 average. We’ll go with the chip time to keep me honest. I’m very happy with this run because I kept the pace in the 8’s the whole way and I handled the inclines pretty easily.

Run Day 65 / Ride Day 1 – Fitbit Blaze Passes The Test

I couldn’t have asked for a better March morning to pound the pavement for a race. I watched my training closely this week. I built in a cross training day on Monday with no running. Then I ran three days and rested on Friday. I felt fresh this morning and was ready to run.

I finished the St Malachi Church Run with an 8:45 average for 5 miles. I was 87 out of 160 in my age group and for the second year in a row faster than the year before. The Fitbit Blaze did very well for its first race and it was alone on my arms with no backup watch. It’s been a long time since I’ve raced with just one watch.

I topped off the day with my first ride of the season. I thought it was warmer than it really was, but the wind out of the North was deceiving. I didn’t dress correctly so I only clipped off 12 miles. I was a bit slower with a 16.4 mph, but not complaining for my first ride. Again, the Fitbit Blaze did very well. I rode with only the Blaze and no Cateye or TomTom. I noticed it took the Blaze a few seconds to get up to the correct speed…it seems to build up to your speed, but it wasn’t a big deal once I got used to it.

A good day for the Blaze…and for me.

Run Day 60 – Closing Out February

I spent the morning in the car so I was antsy to get out on the road. Didn’t know what to expect as I’m still fighting some jet lag from coming back from the West Coast. I took it easy yesterday so I wanted to push it a bit more today.

I did a little bit of everything from speed to tempo. I finished with a 9:06 average for 5 miles. I’d love to say this will be the last time I run this year in snow, but I know better. I’m sure there will be a few more days of with hat, gloves and snow flakes in my face.

I just got around to looking at what I did in February. I finished the month with 124.2 miles and a 9:14 average. Not too shabby…improved the average from January.
